 | Early release for 80 prisoners a day leads to more crime |
 |
Final figures of the scheme, launched in June 2007 and finally ended last month (just prior to a General Election -- any connection, I wonder?) showed 81,578 prisoners were released early, including more than 16,000 violent offenders.
Of these 1,234 committed a total of 1,624 new offences during they time they would normally have still been in jail, including at least 3 murders.
Further figures just released confirm that almost 700 criminals are still on the loose, including 15 murderers, when they should have been recalled to prison. Up to a third are foreign offenders, whom the authorities cannot find.
despite these figures, the Labour government still allows prisoners to apply for another scheme, releasing them 135 days early!
"The system needs a full review to protect the law-abiding citizens of this country," says Ben Gummer, Conservative Parliamentary candidate for Ipswich.
